Guns N Roses cancel South African dates

Guns N Roses have cancelled their shows in South Africa, leaving the nation's largest outdoor festival without a headliner.

The band were scheduled to headline the My Coke Festival 2007 with Hoobastank and Evanescence at Johannesburg's New Market Racecourse on April 27, as well as Cape Town's Kenilworth Racecourse on May 1.

They will no longer play these dates due to an injury suffered by bassist Tommy Stinson.

"Stinson recently sprained his left wrist in a fall and the injury has not yet healed," reads a statement issued by promoter Big Concerts. "As a result, Guns N Roses will not make their two scheduled performances at My Coke Fest in South Africa at the end of the month."

The African dates were supposed to kick off the band's world tour.

Guns N Roses' Japan shows have also been postponed indefinitely.
The Hold Steady close Sunday's Carling Tent action

The Hold Steady played a headline set tonight (August 26) in the Carling Tent at the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival, bringing the weekend's musical events there to a close.

Taking the stage at 22:35 GMT, the band ran through tracks from their latest album, 'Boys And Girls In America', plus a spattering of old favourites.

The Hold Steady played to a half-ful tent - possibly because Klaxons, who had been one of the buzz bands of the weekend, were playing in the NME/Radio One Tent at the same time.

Nevertheless, singer/guitarist Craig Finn, wearing a white Minnesota Twins baseball shirt, led his band through their set in an ecstatic mood, laughing and smiling throughout, as well as throwing "Superman" poses and mock lecturing-style wagging fingers at the crowd.

"We've seen a lot of bands this weekend," he told the crowd after playing 'Banging Camp'. "We've heard a lot of songs about boys and girls," he continued. "This is another song about a boy and a girl. And a horse." The band then played 'Chips Ahoy', which won some of the biggest cheers of the set.

Closing with a high-octane 'Killer Parties', The Hold Steady left the crowd smiling cheering for more.
